Historical and contemporary fiction combine in this uplifting story of community and empowerment

Helena is a middle-aged, unfulfilled library assistant. She’s single, lives in a grotty studio flat, and is in constant pain. She wishes her boss would just let her disappear between the pages in the library’s History section.

But then history comes to her. Cynthia, an elderly library user, shares a selection of fascinating letters collected by her historian daughter. Women whom history has largely forgotten step off the page as Helena is transported into the lives of pharaohs and queens, artists and radicals.

Cynthia encourages her to compile the letters into a book. Helena refuses, weighed down with self-doubt. But the more letters she reads, the more she views life and relationships differently. These letters from the past have become entwined with her own future. Can she find the confidence to write the book, and will giving these women a voice finally allow her to find her own?

Also available in ebook and paperback from all major retailers.

About The Author

M.J. Buckman

M.J. Buckman

M.J. Buckman (Em) grew up in the south east of England. She moved to London in the 1980s to study and party, before getting married and bringing up two sons, whilst working in the not-for-profit sector. Em always wanted to become an author outside of the writing she did at work, but only found the time and headspace after moving to the south coast to retire.

Em is the author of an award-wining non-fiction book about LGBT+ history and culture and mental health, and a novel which combines contemporary and historical fiction. She also writes a regular blog.

Em's books aim to give a voice to people from all walks of life and from different times and places, and contain themes of accepting ourselves and others, while her blogs also include articles on mental health and becoming a published author later in life.

Em lives with her unbelievably tolerant husband, her anxious as anything little dog and her cool as anything big cat.
